About ChessGPT
A Lightweight Way to Play Chess With AI
ChessGPT is a fun, minimalist web tool that lets you play chess against an AI powered by ChatGPT. Built as a side project by a developer exploring ChatGPT plugins, it provides a creative way to test your chess skills with the help of GPT-3.5 or GPT-4.
Designed for Simplicity and Privacy
There’s no login, no tracking, and no server-side processing. All moves are handled directly in your browser, so your data stays private. Whether you're testing strategies or just killing time, ChessGPT offers a quick and accessible experience.
How ChessGPT Works
Use PGN or FEN to Play
You can play by pasting a PGN (Portable Game Notation) or FEN (Forsyth–Edwards Notation) into the interface. These notations let you track or start from any position, giving you full flexibility to explore openings, puzzles, or endgames.
Connect via OpenAI API
For users with API access, simply enter your API key to enable dynamic gameplay through GPT-4. The AI then takes your moves and responds with its own, generating commentary or logic as it plays.
AI Performance and Recommendations
GPT-3.5 vs GPT-4
While GPT-3.5 can handle basic chess logic, GPT-4 offers stronger positional understanding and better overall gameplay. For a more challenging and realistic experience, GPT-4 is recommended—especially for intermediate and advanced players.
No Plugin Access Required
The original idea started as a plugin experiment, but ChessGPT is fully usable without any plugins. This web version removes barriers and makes it easy for anyone to jump in.
Developer Notes and Open Source
A Hobby Project With Open Code
ChessGPT is an experimental, open-source tool. The creator describes the code as «rough and ready,» ideal for those who want to tinker with it or build their own chess-related GPT tools.
Community and Support
While not a commercial product, ChessGPT invites contributions via Patreon and encourages users to follow the developer’s YouTube channel for updates, demos, and similar projects.
